Rage Against Acer – Windows XP on X1700
February 23rd, 2009 Posted in Miscellaneous
As my Computer (AMD Sempron) got a little outdated I searched for a replacement and bought an Acer X1700. It came with Vista x64 pre-installed. As I need some Apps that just don´t work well on Vista, especially not on 64-bit Vista I decided to make a Windows XP parallel install. It turned out that it would not be that easy as i thought. First I had to switch SATA to IDE mode in Bios to get XP installed. There are no drivers for XP on the European Acer Website. I was lucky to find some on the Taiwan Pages . But it turned out that the diver downloads are extremely slow. Even with a download manager I am waiting for 2 days now to finish the download (about 50% done). That’s what i call a BAD service…

I too am in your position, I just wish I found this sooner. Support told me that there are no drivers for XP for their product. I am going to have to salvage what I can from this and build a new computer. The hard drive, processor, memory and DVD drive should have XP compatiable motherboards for it. I will post again when this ordeal is done with a cheap way out of this mess.
Don’t buy Acer, they are scammers.

I am in the same problem, im trying to install xp, but I tried with lots of xp cd´s differents. With Sata drivers inside, xp sp3, unattended, without any sp, and i have a lots of issues, windows 0×000007c errors, freeze screen, no device detected, etc. Im going to try today to look for IDE-SATA option in the bios, Hope to it works !
